Sidney Alfred Parsons and his AncestorsAn advertisement for the sale of William Newlyn’s property in Owslebury and Upham was placed in the Salisbury and Winchester Journal on the 13th of March 1815. It read as follows:
Hants — Copyholds for Sale at Upham and Owslebury.
TO be SOLD by AUCTION, by Messrs. Clark, at the Bell and Crown Inn, in Winchester, on Tuesday the 28th of March, 1815, at
three o'clock in the afternoon, subject to conditions to be then and there produced, (unless previously disposed of by Private Contract, of which
due notice will be given.) — Lot 1. All that substantial brick-built DWELLING-HOUSE and PREMISES, together with about 30 acres of excellent
Arable Land, and an unlimited Right for Cows on Stroudwood Common, situated at Upham aforesaid, now in the occupation of Mr. Wm. Newlyn, the proprietor.
The dwelling-house comprises two sitting rooms, kitchen, pantry, brewhouse, cellar, and six good bed chambers; the four front rooms are fourteen feet
square. A good stable, barns, outhouses, and various convenient offices detached. Also a neat Cottage, a short distance from the dwelling-house. The
above premises are Copyhold of Inheritance, under the Bishop of Winchester, situated in the centre of a fine sporting country, commanding a good view
of the Southampton river and the Isle of Wight, and might with little expense be rendered a genteel family residence. The barns and stable are easily
convertible into an excellent malthouse, sufficient to make 25 quarters per week. Upham is seven miles from Winchester, and three from Bishop's Waltham.
Lot 2. All that COTTAGE and GARDEN, well stocked with thriving fruit trees, together with a piece of Land, known by the name of Tanner's Paddock,
situated at Baybridge, in the parish of Owslebury, containing, by estimation, one acre.
Lot 3. A Piece of ARABLE LAND, called Baybridge Close, in the parish of Owslebury, containing, by estimation, seven acres and three-quarters.
Owslebury is four miles from Winchester.
Lots 2 and 3 are entitled to unlimited Rights for Sheep on Owslebury Down, for horses and cows on Coldin Common, and are copyhold of inheritance,
under the Manor of Marwell.
For a view of the above apply to Mr. Wm. Newlyn, at Upham; and for further particulars (if by letter, post paid) to the Auctioneers, High-street,
