Sidney Alfred Parsons and his AncestorsElizabeth Taylor was Sidney Parsons’ paternal grandmother. Her son John with her husband Edward Parsons was Sidney’s father and the present author’s great-grandfather.
Elizabeth was baptised in Marston Magna in Somerset on the 15th of April 1810, a daughter of John Taylor who was a baker, and his wife Rosanna Bond. John and Rosanna Bond had both been born in High Ham, a village near Langport on the edge of the Somerset levels, but they had married in Yeovil which is not far from Marston Magna.
Elizabeth had two sisters, Mary and Sarah, and two brothers, Thomas and John. Her eldest brother Thomas eventually took over the bakery in Marston Magna from his father.
Elizabeth married Edward Parsons in February 1831. Edward was the eldest son of the owner of the largest farm in the village.
At first Elizabeth and Edward lived in Marston Magna and the following year they had twin daughters, Jane and Elizabeth who were baptised there. But Jane died when she was only 5 months old. Their next child was a boy, Isaac, and then another girl whom they named Jane after her deceased elder sister.
Although Elizabeth’'s husband Edward was the eldest son, his father Charles chose not to leave him a legacy and his wealth passed to Edward’s brothers and sisters. So Edward and Elizabeth lived the lives of ordinary working country people. Edward took a job as a gamekeeper in Bruton and he and Elizabeth lived there for a few years. They had another son while they were there and they named him James. By 1844 he and his family had moved back to Marston Magna where they had two more daughters, Mary and Martha, and two more sons, John and Henry. But Henry died when he was only 12 years old. They lived in Marston Magna for the remainder of their lives.
Elizabeth died of chronic bronchitis and exhaustion in Marston Magna on the 29th of December 1874. She was 64 years old. Her husband Edward was 65. Seven years later he married again and lived with his second wife, who was also called Elizabeth, until he died.
