Dorothy Bennett and her Ancestors

Elizabeth Bennett née Misselbrook (1804 to 1880)

Elizabeth Bennett née Misselbrook was a great-grandmother of Dorothy Bennett, who was the wife of Sidney Alfred Parsons.


Elizabeth was born in the village of North Stoneham in Hampshire, but as a young teenager she moved with her parents, brother and sister to Chilworth, a neighbouring village, and lived the rest of her life there. She was baptised in North Stoneham on the 22nd of April, 1804.

Chilworth lies between Southampton and Romsey, and is marked with a red C on the map.

Elizabeth’s parents were Thomas Misselbrook and Elizabeth Ireland. Thomas was a gamekeeper on the Chilworth estate.


On the 8th of October 1829 Elizabeth married Henry Bennett who also came from Chilworth. The couple stayed in Chilworth where Henry worked as a labourer and by 1841 they were living next door to Elizabeth’s parents. Her three brothers were still living with her parents, but her sisters had left home by then.

Henry and Elizabeth had four sons — Henry, George, Richard and Walter, and then five daughters — Frances (Fanny), Kate, Charlotte, Agnes and Alice. Frances was later to become the mother of George Henry Bennett and therefore a grandmother of Dorothy Bennett, the wife of Sidney Parsons.

After Elizabeth’s husband Henry died at home on the 1st of July 1861, Elizabeth continued to live in Chilworth with her children. By 1871 her daughter Frances and her family were living with her. They consisted of Frances’ husband Thomas Peckham, her illegitimate son George Henry, and the children which Frances and Thomas had had together.

Elizabeth died of a diseased heart on the 4th of November 1880 in Chilworth.
